Controversial Kenyan movie, “Rafiki” will be screened at the Milwaukee Film Festival, set to begin from 18 October to 1st of November in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.
Produced by Steven Markovitz and directed by Wanuri Kahiu, the movie tries to dissect a thorny and complicated love story between two Kenyan girls, Kena and Ziki who, despite their fathers being political opponents, are set to actualize their love for each order even in the face of society’s intolerance and ostracism.
Shot in Swahili with English subtitles, the movie is billed for first release on 26 September in France, and has been nominated for a host of awards.
“Rafiki” may be the first Kenyan film to screen at Cannes but it has also been banned in its home country, where lesbianism and homosexuality is greatly abhorred and attracts stiff prison term. The Kenyan film board claimed the film attempted to “promote lesbianism”.
Cast for the movie include Nini Wacera, Samantha Mugatsia, Dennis Musyoka, Jimmy Gathu, Patricia Amira, Sheila Munyiva, Muthoni Gathecha, Neville Misati, Patricia Kihoro, and Nice Githinji.
