Veteran Nollywood filmmaker and one-time Chief Executive officer of Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), Afolabi Adesanya, has been named the Chairman of 2018 edition of the ZUMA Film Festival (ZUFF).
Dr Chidia Maduekwe, the Managing Director of NFC and Chairman, Organising Committee of ZUFF, pointed out at a news conference in Abuja last Wednesday that ZUFF had “always and carefully ensured that its award winners emerge purely on merit, and its choice of jury predicated on global best practices,” and Adesanya being a renowned filmmaker and television director makes him a good choice as jury chairman.
Afolabi Adesanya indeed has a vast experience in the industry. He was a member of the 1992 Nigerian National Film Festival Committee and a member of Jury NTA (Nigerian Television Authority) Adverts Awards, 1993. Later in 2009, he was Jury President, Video/TV Category, FESPACO 2009.
The 2018 ZUFF being the 9th edition in the series is scheduled to hold from December 1 to December 7 in Abuja with the theme “Archiving for Creativity.”
According to Dr Maduekwe, the goal of NFC, who are the organizers of ZUFF (popularly known as Nigeria’s national film festival), is to have images and the sound associated with the images available for present and future generations.
He added that the theme is meant to reawaken the awareness of filmmakers and other stakeholders on the important role of film archiving and its posterity values.
The categories for awards listed for the 9th edition of the film festival include Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Documentary, Best Foreign Film and Best Cinematography. This is so as Maduekwe explained, because “at every film festival, participants and global attention is at the awards within the various categories.”
ZUMA Film Festival is a platform for Nigerian film practitioners to network with their counterparts from other parts of the world and stimulate co-production and financing opportunities.
It presents the Nigerian film industry as a vibrant and viable investment option to Nigeria and international business.
