The Africa Centre is calling all artists – composers, writers, filmmakers, curators, visual and performance artists – to apply for its Artists in Residency (AIR) 2019 programme.

The AIR programme was initiated in 2011 when the Africa Centre realised that due to a dearth of residency programmes on the continent,  there were few opportunities for African artists. It therefore initiated the  AIR project in order to celebrate the achievements of African artists while also supporting them and  increasing the opportunities available to them. The programme is open to all African artists who are provocative, innovative and are highly engaged with social issues in their art forms.

In implementing its AIR project, Africa Centre has partnered with several organisations that offer residencies to artists. One of such organisations is the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center Residency Programme in Italy. AIR also offers residencies in Australia, Brazil, Spain, and the United States of America.

Each residency has a distinct structure, set of requirements and duration. The costs of the residency and round-trip airfare are also included in the AIR package.

There are two distinct application processes for the 2019 programme.

The first application process is for mid- to late-career artists alone. Artists in this category are eligible for the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center Residency Programme alone, and they can apply by registering online and creating a user ID and password by following this link.

They must request an Africa Centre AIR application form by sending an email to airsubmissions@africacentre.net. The body of the email must contain the applicant’s name and surname.

Following this process applicants would be required to provide:

  • An eligibility form
  • An applicant details form
  • An abbreviated CV
  • Recommendations
  • Published reviews
  • A project plan

Applications for the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center Residency Programme close on December 1, 2017.

The second application process is for emerging or mid-career artists. Artists in this category are eligible for residency opportunities at the Bundanon Trust (Australia), Instituto Sacatar (Brazil), Jiwar (Spain), Fountainhead Residency (Miami, US) or International Studio and Curatorial Programme (New York, US). Interested artists can read the application guidelines here. The deadline for applications in this category is December 16, 2017.
